Hello!
I am Caterina, an art historian and writer based in Edinburgh. I write about art, photography, and visual propaganda.
I am Caterina, an art historian and writer based in Edinburgh. I write about art, photography, and visual propaganda.
I was born in Verona, Italy. I travelled extensively and settled, but never for too long, in Venice, the San Francisco Bay Area, Beijing, and Tianjin. I now live in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I have been writing about art, photography, and Chinese visual culture for more than five years. My work has appeared in Art&Object, Natural Diamonds, The Contemporary China Centre, Photography of China, The British Association for Chinese Studies (BACS) Journal. I collaborated with the Chinese-Dutch photographer Xiaoxiao Xu to write essays for her projects Watering My Horse by a Spring at the Foot of the Long Wall (2020) and Shooting the Tiger (2022). Since 2018, I've interviewed artists and photographers such as Sofia Karim, Gakkin, Pixy Liao, Maggie Steber, Prashant Panjiar, and Marco Almaviva.
I graduated in 2018 with a PhD in art history from the University of Glasgow. My thesis explored how the Chinese Communist Party employed photography as a propaganda tool during the Anti-Japanese War (1937-45). I am particularly interested in the portrayal of landscape and women for political purposes as well as the role of emotions in propaganda strategies.
I am open to collaborations with artists, photographers, journalists, and scholars. Don't hesitate to get in touch!
